150th Parish Anniversary

St. Joseph’s on Capitol Hill is thrilled to celebrate our 150th Parish Anniversary in 2018. In commemoration of this significant milestone, we are planning several opportunities for parishioners and neighbors alike to grow in community together. Please mark your calendars for the dates below and be on the lookout for additional opportunities in the weeks ahead.

Day of Service – Saturday, June 23, 2018

“When you forget yourself and think of others, this is love! And with the washing of the feet the Lord teaches us to be servants, and above all, servants as He was a servant to us, for every one of us." – Pope Francis

During the morning of Saturday, June 23, 2018, over a hundred parishioners and area volunteers will come to together from 8:30 am – noon, donating their time, skills, and talents to support our Capitol Hill neighborhood. Parishioners of all ages are encouraged to participate.

Volunteers will assist area nonprofits including DC Central Kitchen, the Madonna House, and Capitol Hill Group Ministry to tackle much-needed tasks like meal preparation, cleaning, painting, and more. Volunteers will also support the beautification of the parish church, pick up trash in the area, and assist neighborhood residents in need of yard work, painting, minor home repairs, companionship, and cleaning. For parishioners with mobility limitations, we will have opportunities for you to make rosaries for our troops and write letters to the homebound, ill, and imprisoned.

If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up here or fill out a volunteer registration form which you will find in the church pews. Likewise, if you or someone you know in the Capitol Hill area is in need of assistance with a small-scale home project (up to 3 hours of work) please let us know about it by using the service project registration form which can be found here or in the church pews.

Blood Drive for Children’s National Medical Center – Sunday, September 16, 2018

Did you know 1 unit of blood can save the lives of up to 4 or 5 children? Did you also know that Children’s National Medical Center only receives about 60% of its needed blood supply from donations and must purchase the rest to meet the needs of its young patients?

Join your fellow parishioners on September 16, 2018 between the hours of 9:00 am – 1:30 pm for a blood donation drive benefiting Children’s National Medical Center. A typical blood donation session takes approximately forty minutes, and the mobile donation center will be parked in front of St. Joseph’s for easy access and speedy service. Know that the blood you donate will go directly to the young patients who are being treated at Children’s and that your selfless donation helps to lessen their overall cost of treatment. Check out this Washington Post article for additional background.

Celebration Mass and Reception – Saturday, October 20, 2018

As we near the culmination of the 150th Jubilee year, St. Joseph’s will rejoice in our past, present, and future with a celebration mass at 5:30 pm on Saturday, October 20th. We hope that all parishioners will choose to attend this celebration mass and you are encouraged to invite friends and family to join for this special occasion. Note, the Saturday evening Jubilee mass will fulfill the Sunday mass obligation. A reception will be held at a nearby venue following mass. Be on the lookout for more details.

If you have ideas for Jubilee anniversary activities or are interested in supporting the planning and execution of these activities, please call the parish office at (202) 547-1223 or email Father Gurnee at pastor@st-josephs.org. Each and every one of you is a valuable member of our parish family and we are very much looking forward to celebrating this 150th Jubilee year with you!
