Listening Session Sept 23

Dear Parishioners,

I wanted to let you know that there will be a Listening Session here in the church about the abuse scandal  on Sunday September 23 from 9:15 am to 10:15 am.  As you may know, Cardinal Wuerl asked the priests to do this on the weekend of September 1-2.  I didn't do that for two reasons.  It was Labor Day Weekend and I was afraid a number of people  might be away who wanted to participate.  I also wanted to give a chance to advertise this to give people a greater chance to attend.  When I spoke at all the Masses the weekend of the August 25-26, I offered to hold a listening session for our parish.  Only four parishioners told me they thought that would be a good idea.  But I assumed that many more who wanted such a forum to be held chose simply to let others speak for them.  I also recognize this situation causes embarrassment and pain for us and so others would not like to be present.

I've asked Andrew Buonapane, a member of our parish and the emeritus leader of our young adults to be present as well.  Andrew was a recent seminarian for the Archdiocese of Washington and can speak personally to us about the screening process meant to help protect our children.

As always, my door is open, if any of you want to speak to me beforehand, by all means.  I want to promote a culture of transparency and consensus.

Sincerely in Christ,

                Fr. Gurnee
